What Is an Enneagram Typing Session (And Why It's More Accurate Than a Quiz)

You have taken the quiz. Maybe more than one.

You got a result. Maybe it felt right. Maybe it did not. Maybe you got a different answer every time and now you are more confused than when you started.

An Enneagram typing session is a completely different experience. It is a one-on-one conversation with a certified Enneagram practitioner who asks questions designed to uncover not what you do, but why you do it. And that distinction changes everything.

If you have been circling the Enneagram for a while, reading about types, wondering if you are really a 3 or just a high-functioning 1, this is what actually gets you to clarity.

Why Enneagram Quizzes Get It Wrong So Often

Quizzes ask about behavior. They ask what you do in a given situation, how you react, what you prefer. The problem is that multiple types can exhibit the same behavior for completely different reasons.

A Type 1 and a Type 3 can both be extremely driven at work. A Type 2 and a Type 9 can both avoid conflict. A Type 5 and a Type 4 can both withdraw when they are overwhelmed.

If a quiz only sees the behavior, it cannot tell the difference. And so it gives you a type that matches what you do, not what is actually driving you underneath.

I was mistyped by a quiz myself. Because the quiz looked at my patterns on the surface and matched them to the wrong motivation. It was not until I went through a typing conversation with someone trained to listen for the deeper threads that I landed on the right type.

What Actually Happens in a Typing Session

A typing session with me lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes.

I ask a series of questions designed to get underneath the surface. I am not asking what you do in a certain situation. I am listening for what motivates you and what you fear. Those two things are the core of the Enneagram, and they are what a quiz almost never captures accurately.

We go deep, fast. I am looking for the threads of the thing under the thing. Not the patterns you can already name, but the ones running so quietly you might not even realize they are there.

As we talk, I am tracking type by type. And even when we are discussing questions that are not directly related to your type, there is information to gather. Every answer tells me something.

A typing session is not a test with a right answer. It is a conversation that helps you see what has been running in the background your whole life.

Once we have worked through the questions, I share what I heard and how it connects to two or three possible types. We discuss what resonates and what does not. Then we narrow it down, usually to one type, sometimes two.

From there, I walk you through how the Enneagram actually works: your type's core motivation, its fear structure, its patterns under stress, and its path toward growth. You leave with resources to keep learning on your own and an overview of all nine types so you can understand the people around you, too.

Who Books a Typing Session (And Why)

Most people book out of curiosity. They have heard about the Enneagram, they have tried the quizzes, and they want to actually know their type with some certainty.

Some come because they think knowing their type will fix something. I will be honest: that is usually not how it works. Knowing your type does not solve your problems. But it does give you a framework for understanding why you keep running into the same ones.

Others come through referrals from their therapist, because understanding their Enneagram type gives their therapy work a sharper lens. I have also done typing sessions for couples, where both partners go through the process and then use what they learn to understand the friction points in their relationship.

The through line is that people are ready to look at themselves with more precision than a quiz can offer.

What Surprises People the Most

Two things, consistently.

First, the difference between behavior and motivation. Most people have never had someone separate those two things for them. They have spent their whole lives assuming that what they do is who they are. When someone names the motivation underneath the behavior, it lands differently. It feels like being truly seen for the first time.

Second, how helpful it is to look at your patterns with some objectivity. Not judgment. Not criticism. Just a clear view of the thing that has been running you, named in a way that makes sense. That combination of acknowledgment and objectivity is what makes the Enneagram so powerful. It validates your experience while also giving you a way to step outside of it.

The acknowledgment of your patterns, combined with the ability to see them more objectively, is a real game changer.

What Happens After You Know Your Type

Some people take what they learn and run with it on their own. They read, they observe, they start catching their patterns in real time. That is a perfectly good outcome.

Others want to go deeper. Knowing your type is the map. Coaching is the work of actually walking the territory. A lot of my coaching clients started with a typing session and then realized they wanted support in interrupting the patterns they could now see clearly.

And some people bring it into their relationships or their teams. Understanding your type changes how you communicate, how you handle conflict, and how you lead. It is not just self-knowledge for its own sake. It is a tool for how you show up in the world.

A typing session is $150 for 75 minutes. That is more than a free online quiz, obviously. But a quiz gives you a best guess based on behavior. A typing session gives you a real conversation, a trained set of ears, and a much higher level of confidence in your result.
